DirectX August update now out (Redist.)

Your games talk to DirectX, DirectX then hardware accelerates any features your gpx card supports.
DirectX is a superset (11 contains everything of DirectX 10, 9, 8 etc)

DX 11 doesn't contain 9/8/7, they are separate.

DX10 is included in DX11, its an addition and update, dx11 is fully compatible with dx10, your computer runs DX11 and only uses the dx10 features if thats all thats available.

DX9 is different but is compatible with all the old versions.

The reason dx10 isn't available on XP is because dx9 is an entirely different thing to DX10.

DXdiag reports DX11 for me, but being its windows 7 I assume it always did, not checked it before this update though.

It turns out that to get vista to say it's using DX11, you need this version of directx, AND, you need to have installed the "Platform Update for Windows Vista" which is currently only at beta.

Anyone who is interested can find the Windows vista platform update beta here, but you use it at your own risk, it is beta afterall.

Think I'd rather wait for the finished article, not like DX11 is any use right now.

I think I'm going to hold off on it myself, unless someone can prove that it improves DX10 and DX9 performance with it's multithreading support for DX3D, and doesn't cause loads of broken games.
I have no idea whether the multithreading comes for free, or whether a game engine needs to have been written to take advantage of it.

See windows forum, windows vista platform updates are out that add dx11 to Vista, just in time for the new ATI cards.
