Hey Guys,

I'm looking for a cheap laptop (and I mean really cheap) to use to remote desktop into my desktop PC. I've had a 2nd hand Toshiba Tecra from an auction site in the past and although I had to put more RAM in it and get the motherboard replaced (for free by toshiba) it's a great PC so I'm looking for something similar.

However, having had all the hassle of this laptop i'm considering buying one from new this time so I get the warranty etc. However, I'm not looking to spend much at all (ideally £300 or less) but I realise it may not be possible to get a new one for that price.

So, what are the really cheap new laptops like? I think they generally have celerons in them (which I know were really bad in desktops) or turions in them. Which is better?

Any help gratefully appreciated

James

Turions are way better than Celeron M's by a mile but not as good a C2D obviously.

I paid 275 for a p4-m 1800, 256mb, 20 gig about 5 months ago but now you could probably get a centrino 1.4-1.6ghz, 512mb, 40 gig for just over £300.

The chepest dell one was 298 inc the other day under special offer now seems to have gone up and it was a celeron-m , I think these chips are p4s with half the cache? so not really that bad.

That one is £348inc now but it is a celeron-m 1.6, 1mb l2 cache...512mb ddr, 40 gig. Edit this one is still 298inc but 'while stocks last'...Turions start off at 450ish, note that these prices come from the manufacturers website and maybe cheaper elsewhere by quite a margin.
