i've done this before, CarPlan Tetroclean (brush on type) is good, but make sure you cover your electrics well.... Can help add value to your car when looking to sell.
I must admit that I steam cleaned my 306's engine and used 'GUNK' on my 205's engine, then used a hose to rinse it off. Didn't cover anything up on either of the cars.
The 306 was fine. The 205 however was not
I had to spray a load of WD40 over the area where the spark plugs are and give it a good run, it eventually cleared up. That engine really needed it though because it has an oil leak and was absolutely covered in oil!
I think the god of Peugeot electronics was asleep when I washed them
EDIT: The car stunk of WD40 for a few days afterwards, and when stationary after driving there would be steam rising from the bonnet because of the oil
I used Autoglym spray on engine bay degreaser and a brush...got my uncle to help me out. We had plastic bags over the distrubutor cap (or at least i think thats what he told me it was) and the battery. Gave it a bit of a jet wash to get the worst off. Spray the degreaser on and brush into the worst bits. Then jet wash off...no problems.
I've never gone for really polishing it up because it'll get really dirty anyway.
I think there's a fine line between washing your engine bay because it's dirty and washing your engine bay because you don't want the prospective buyer to see the oil leaks! I think the brilliantly shiny look looks as though you are trying to hide something. Personally.
