Disable case fans at idle

Just wondering if turning off the fans while my pc is idle would cause anything to overheat?

cpu + gpu fan would remain running and they are silent at idle anyway
but with the case fans being filtered they produce a bit of noise..

this is mostly wanted for when i download overnight or something
 
I have half of my radiator fans switch off when idling or just web browsing & temps are pretty much the same as with them on.
Maybe 1 or 2c higher but nothing to worry about.
 
yeah i might give it a go one night then, even with no real airflow the temps surely wouldnt get too high while idle anyway would they?
 
If overclocked the VRM's will get very hot (I know the machine is at idle but you will be surprised)
South bridge also always gets warm and requires airflow to cool.

the issue you have is most mainboards don't monitor vrm temps.

I would think even the lowest rpm turning would be a lot better, surely they cant be that loud at low rpm ?

Then again I'm always err on the side of caution.

running haswell i5 4670k

and no its not loud at all really, got my fans at 600-700 rpm
its more just a case of preferring silence when sleeping, im a pretty light sleeper so doesnt take much to wake me up

probably just one of them things i will have to deal with as id rather not risk it then
 
An Aquaero will allow you to do this.

Maybe a bit overkill for a non-wc, non-overclocked rig, but it allows you to monitor and control all fans based on whatever metrics you like.
 
Yeah, most fans are fairly quiet nowadays turned right down. I used to have all my fans turn off at idle but now i leave a handful of them going as i cant hear them anyway unless i stick my head in the case.

Speedfan is the free software that allows you to do so but you might not need it if your Mobo comes with fan control software.
 
When I tried this I just ended up in a constant loop with Speedfan switching the fans on at the relevant point that I set, the fans would cool everything down and shut off, rinse repeat.

It was more annoying than just having quiet fans set as low as they will go in the BIOS
 
Yeah im guessing ya had the min temp set too low so that at idle they would on kicking in, ya have to set the temp that they kick in at pretty high to stop that happening, i agree with you that if your fans are quiet enough then just set them as low as possible and leave them to it.

In my personally experience I have found the cpu speed spikes "Brief load ramp up! Oh quiet now, ramp down, oh wait ! " etc

All the time anything is changing the vrm's are working hard.

Your mileage may vary :)
