I'm wondering if this is entirely possible? even when going to the advanced settings and disabling ClearType, it is still used within the taskbar and explorer menu navigation areas  I can't stand the thing.

I've disabled it within IE7, within the advanced properties tab of Appearance Settings and also disabled the smoothing of fonts within explorer and I still get ClearType in the places mentioned above

see here

I also notice that there is no uninstaller for Windows Defender? Seems the only way to stop the thing working is to disable the service...

Not possible AFAIK. Could be wrong. You could always just get used to it - the days of Windows 95 font rendering have passed :)

Don't know about Vista but in Windows XP

You right click on desktop --> Click on appearance tab --> go to effects --> Change the setting.

Yeah they've done that but it doesn't disable it everywhere, in Vista :)

The days of blurry vga and crt eyestrain has passed as well which is why people don't want to emulate it by using cleartype. The whole point of dvi and lcd is sharp text which is exactly the opposite to what cleartype does.

If text in newspapers, books and magazines looked like Windows 95's font rendering then you'd have a good point there :)
