Disable overlock

Hi,

I'm planning to upgrade my PC in the near future to an i7. I'll be using the PC for both games and work. Whilst being used for work I'd like to disable any overclock because I won't be using the extra speed. What's the easiest way of doing this? Something like a bios select option on bootup allowing me to choose one of several bios profiles would do. Even better if I can modify the overclock options from within windows so I don't have to reboot.

Do any of the motherboards support this?

Thanks.

Theres not really any need if you have speed step enabled as the chip will automatically clock itself down when not being pushed. Even my aging Q6600 drops to about 2Ghz when its not doing much then clocks up to the full 3.2 when needed.

Hope that helps a bit

Thanks but on my current e6700 cpu I had to disable speedstep to get a better overclock. Is that no longer the case?

I use different profiles using the BIOS as I do not need all my power 24/7.

There are applications that allow tweaking from within windows but by the time you have messed around you may as well restart and load a new profile.

Almost all motherboards will save a couple of profiles these days. I have an x58 i7 which spends most of its time running flat out at 4ghz, but when I want quiet there's a two core, 3ghz undervolted profile which works excellently.

Speed step et al are probably a valid alternative.

How easy is it to choose a bios profile? Do you have to enter the bios, load the profile and then save and exit?

It's odd, I've opened and read the thread a couple of times now but this was the first time I noticed the spelling error. And lo and behold, someone's now pointed it out too. I reckon one of the dons is having a laugh ;)
