Is there a way of preventing the card from auto-boosting ? Maybe my understanding of how this feature works is what is wrong here.......

Stock clock is at 880 and boosts to 960, if I manually set the core to 1150 do I assume that there will be no boost kicking in or does it simply try to boost it even when overclocked by a fixed percentage ?

I'm pretty sure when you overclock it, the boost function is effectively disabled. The boost is meant to work by seeing if you are under the maximum power spec of the card, it will dynamically boost. However, when you're overclocked, you'll pretty much be using all of the power available to the card so it won't try to dynamically overclock.

7950 has a TDP of 200W. So if you're sitting there at 880MHz on the core and drawing 170W, the card will use the 30W headroom to apply a boost clock.

With your card at 1150MHz, the card may be drawing 250W+ at load so there will be no occasion where the card will be able to boost.

In conclusion, I don't think there is a way to stop boosting but when you get into mild/heavy overclocking, the card won't have the opportunity and the situation will take care of itself.

If you set the clock to 1150 the boost will not work... it will be 1150 when running 3d apps... just make sure to set the power limit to +20%
