Disabling core multiplexing - quad core on bad axe 2

Does anyone know (or would like to try if they have the hardware available :)) what happens if you disable "core multiplexing" on a bad axe 2 with a quad core cpu?

I was just wondering as having 2 cores with 4mb cache (which would probably overclock higher than with the other 2 enabled) would be better for gaming at the moment, but I could use a quad when not gaming.

I'm probably dreaming and it will disable all but one core, but if you don't ask you don't find out - far too many keywords to get anything meaningful out of google :p

Thanks in advance,

not sure exactly what the feature does, but if it disables 2 out of 4 cores then i imagine itll basically turn the cpu into an e6600 (assuming its a q6600 lol)

Well I've just tried it and it goes back to a dual core which is not what I was expecting. No idea how the cache is handled though but I doubt you'll have access to the 4Mb on the disabled die.

EDIT: Might not be the best idea trying this. I've just re-enabled it and now Vista BSODs every boot

Sorry stewart! Wasn't expecting it to do anything bad, especially if it stayed with more than 1 core active. Don't suppose you ran, say, superpi 8m when it was using 2 cores to see if there was a speed increase (indicating more l2) from having 4? Hard to know which cores it has disabled otherwise.

If not don't worry, wouldn't want to cause any more damage to your system.

Good luck repairing vista

Didn't run anything, just a quick look and put the setting back.

Visat's back OK (maybe) after a swift reinstall, not a big deal mind, I'm still testing on that box.
