Disabling Crossfire on an X2

Probably a slightly noob question, but I've never had a crossfire system so please bear with me:)
Anyway, for those games which don't support crossfire or if there is a noticeable microstutterng issue, will one be able to disable crossfire on a 2GB 4870X2 so the card behaves like a 1GB 4870?

Nope.

All the crossfire stuff is done in a transparent hardware layer with no user interaction.

Crossfire is always enabled no matter what.
