Okay, so I'm helping out a friends parents with their wireless and they are wanting the internet disabling at night so the kids can't use it too late. However they need to have 2/3 computers on during the night for themselves and the older son.

They have a BT Home Hub 5, I was suggesting connecting up an Asus N56U and getting a set of power line adapters to connect the PC upstairs to the Router. We could then just disable WiFi within the Routers settings when needed.

Does anyone have any ideas if this would work, can the HH5 be connected to a N56U and would both of them broadcasting WiFi cause issues even if only one of them is used. Would connecting the PC's to the HH5 and the children's laptops to the N56U work, then we could just turn one off at the wall on a night.

I had a look and the only option is to disable a devices access at certain times.

There are so many devices and computers this isn't really a viable option.

In which case you could use the N56U as an AP. Just make sure it's using different wireless channels.

If it's anything like the N66U you'll have an option to turn the radios on and off based on the time of day.

How would I set it up as an Access Point and not as an actual Router, or are they the same thing?

I've not got a clue when it comes to networking really.

The only issue is that no matter what the BT HH5 will still be giving off a wireless signal, it's not possible to enable a modem only mode like the Virgin Media Hub.

Would it cause issues using the HH5 for the adult PCs that will be online constantly, and the N56U for the children PCs so that it can be turned off when required.

For example, the downstairs office PC, and two upstairs PC can be connected via WiFi on the HH5, and the 3 children laptops can connect to the N56U via WiFi. Come 7/8PM the N56U can be turned off and the office door locked.

Add the N56U as an access point. Configure it with a different SSID and password and then only use it for the kids. Leave everyone else on the HH5.

When you want to cut the kids off disable the N56U by whatever method suits you best. If they haven't got the credentials for the HH5 they won't be able to connect to it.

I still think you'd be better of with parental controls, especially if you're going to have to go out and buy that N56U. If it's already spare then fair enough.

If you are going to have to buy something then the N56U is probably overkill. Does it even need to support 5GHz?

I already have the N56U and I'm willing to let it go cheap. I've had a look and the parental controls only seem to be limiting websites access and can't be done on a per computer basis. The only other option is disabling access to certain devices but there are at least 20 different ones connected at one time and there is no way of telling which is which.

I've set the N56U up as an access point and it all seems okay, however nothing can connect too it. Full signal but it just keeps going through obtaining IP, and everything else.
