Disadvantages of SLI?

Aside from the increased power consumpion, increased internal chasis temprature and the space problem, are there any major issues? Should I forget about buying a second 670 and look for a better single card?

Noise is another issue, this is connected to how hot the cards will run. With some new games, it takes a bit till sli profiles are enabled for them. But for me personally, i think sli is great. Certainly a lot better than when it first started out.

You won't find a single GPU card except Titan that will match 670 SLI performance so just go for it. One disadvantage is that some games just don't have SLI profiles so you end up only using one card anyway, Miner Wars 2081 for example which I tried playing last night.

Ahhh ok then. I assume most fps heavy AAA titles are supported then?

Noise can be the big umphhhhhh and was for me. 2 cards = more heat = more fan speeds = more noise.

If noise isn't an issue and heat isn't either, go for it. If noise is a problem, go water cooling :)

SLI works very well 99% of the time.

Microstutter is a consideration but generally completely blown out of proportion I very rarely run into noticeable level of it (basically the feel of the rendered FPS doesn't match the displayed FPS i.e. the game might tell you its rendering at 30fps but it feels like 20fps) I've been using SLI since forever and the times I've run into it as a problem is rare - its mostly caused by user error more often than a problem with multi GPU itself.

The odd game doesn't work with SLI out the box and/or can take awhile for profile support but I've not found it happening too often either.

i had problems with micro stutter on SLI 470's, its actually what made me get a 680.

Drivers will cause you a headache one day as there are always more problems with SLI then a single card.

Had gtx 470's in sli prior to the card in sig. Never had an issue with them tbh. Bit hot, loud and power hungry. But those few niggles were far outweighed by the benefits. Only sold them as the 1.2gb ram count was a bit low for certain games i play. My current 670 is no slouch in the oc'ing department, but the 470's i had clocked like crazy.

Also had this set up no problems had under water but dam where they hot cards as in the kicked a lot of heat into my WC 4x120 2x120 at the time u knew it when these babys where running full pelt

then moved to 570 sli much cooler still no sli problems

then moved once again to 580's after 570 sli decided to go pop still no problems with sli

and finally 680's because the price was so dam good still not having problems with sli the coolest series so far and which i think im stopping with for at least the next 2 years

Yep, ill be going sli with the 670's in a while myself. Still undecided on which model to pair with my wf. Or risk it and try another wf.

I've just ordered a second 680 for SLI, it will be my first SLI experience so i'll see how it goes. Quick question, my motherboard supports 3 way SLI but the bottom PCIE slot runs at 8x. Can i run the second card in that slot to increase airflow or do i have to run them both in the 16x slots?

From a quick search, it seems you should be ok. However, i had an issue with sli on a P6 X58 DE from asus, it could only run sli in the two x16 pcie slots.

If your using reference blower cards, even with the primary slots things wont be too bad. The problem is exaggerated more with non reference cards as i found out unfortunately.

i'll give you a disadvantage, right now one of my 470's isn't being detected.
this happens every now and then

Might be worse with Asus boards
just a heads up

My 470's were used in an asus X58 board, (p6t dlx v2). Worked grand tbh. Excellent board for sli due to it's great slot spacing.
