Disadvantages to buying in the states?

I'm over in the states at the moment and thinking about buying either PS3 or XBOX 360 whilst I'm here. My main question is, is the saving worth it? What functionality will I lose against a console bought in the british isles?

Also tempted to pick up a DS or a PSP - same questions apply!

Please

Not worth getting a 360 but the PS3 is a LOT cheaper and the DS, psp and PS3 are region free except for blue ray movies on the ps3 and umd films on the psp (iirc).

XBOX 360 Premium is $400 (£200), PS3 is $500 (£250), DS Lite is $130 (£65) and PSP is $170 (£85).

That's about a £70 saving on XBOX, £175 saving on PS3, £30 saving on DS, £45 saving on PSP.

That's a ridiculously large saving on a PS3! Very very tempting.

It's % savings you want to look at but yes the PS3 is so stupidly priced over here that I'm surprised anyone on ocuk, who should know the price difference, ever buys a UK model.

My brother is going to America next month so im going to get him to pick me up a PS3.

Some issues are the warrenty its not worldwide, blue ray movies(some) and ps2 games are regionlised, im not planning to watch many blue ray movies or play ps2 games so not a big deal.

why is the PS3 so cheap in the US compared to the 360?

Like Microsoft and Nintendo, Sony add on an extra 42% ish to the US price of the console ( Nintendo 45% and Microsoft 41%), for whatever reasons, but as the US has had a $100 price cut (kinda) which the UK/ Europe havent yet, so there will be a big difference until the UK gets a similar deal. The 360 on the other hand has not had a price cut since launch, so the difference between US and UK has remained the same.

its because people are idiots. its business, if not a single person when and bought a £500 ps3 at launch, it would have dropped in price. for years we simply pay what they ask, so they keep asking for more.

there was recent a bluray standalone, on sony's own site for buying, the us store had it for $1000, it was £1000 on the uk site.

people routinely add on a higher cost if its to be sold in the uk. samsung mark up all screens that are to be sold in monitors in europe, same screens, same plant, shipped to same plants, made into monitors, the ones that go to europe have price increased. nothing to do with import costs. its our really really terrible way of doing business. wasting tax money by the bucketload, raising taxes all over, imports, exports, wage taxes everything. you constantly here about tax breaks to encourage imports and sales and for companies to establish new plants or offices. like amd just got 260mil in tax breaks for their dresden plants in germany, and also are getting big tax breaks to make a fab in new york state. as 1000's of other business's get. we somehow just screw everything up.

is the dollar still at over $2 per £1? you'd be mad not to buy something to be honest. though, does the ps3 go over the limit of undeclareable stuff, its only like £125 now isn't it? fairly big to sneak in.

I walked straight through customs with mine in a massive Electronics Boutique bag and no-one batted an eyelid.
