Disappearing icons

No idea what could be causing this one. Icons which rely on a *.exe file to display the picture (i.e: the picture isn't coming from a *.ico file) sometimes disappear, and only come back if I launch the *.exe in question, and then wait for the picture to update again...

This isn't really great, it makes it look like I've uninstalled some of my programs without getting rid of the icons - not to mention it is a bit ugly.
Anyone know what could be causing this? I rebuilt icon cache and repaired icon images to no avail, and if I right click and hit 'change icon' it tells me the *.exe which was originally pointed to 'contains no icons'... until I actually run the *.exe that is. Ideas?

Off top of my head it may be that your icon cache is hiting its limit. Therefore it can not cache all of your icons.

change this Under XP:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer

Max Cached Icons

Default Value: 500
Change to: 2000

If the value does not exsist you will need to create it.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

Create a new String Value called "Max Cached Icons" with the value of 2000

Also ensure you can force a rebuild of the Icon cache by lowering your video Bit rate to the lowest setting and rebooting. i.e change colours from 32bit to 16bit reboot and then change back to 32bit and reboot again.

And ensure that you have the latest video drivers also.

The next phase would be to start troubleshooting dirvers n apps etc. For example AV software, plug-ins such as windows blinds etc.

You may be lookign at a re-install

I have no more ideas off top of my head. Could be in for a long hall find here!
