Hey guys!

I recently upgraded my PC about 2 weeks ago and am having some problems which I'm scared and very disappointed with because I spent a lot of money! :(:(:(:(:(

PC Specs:-

Asrock Z68 Pro 3
Antec True Power 650W PSU
Went from a 560Ti to a 780
2500K CPU @ Stock
Mount Doom CPU Cooler
Team Vulcan Orange 2*4GB RAM @ 2133Mhz
Went from a Zalman z9 to a Coolermastrer CM690 Advanced II
Added an SSD - 250GB Samsung Evo
Replaced HDD for 2TB Seagate Barrucuda

1 - My PC will not take the XMP profile in bios and will just restart and turn on/off approximately 3 times. To make matters even worse it will do this if I change it to even only 1600Mhz and increasing the timings slightly. I've tried everything, my PC won't accept anything but 1333Mhz with 9-9-9-24 (default). I've triple checked my mobo manual and it does say that it can handle 2133Mhz. But surely it can handle 1600Mhz anyway. :/

2 - I was ready to play some Borderlands 2 earlier this week and have noticed this electrical buzz. I've done some research and have found out maybe it's coil whine. However when they all talk about coil whine, it's a high pitched one. The noise that I'm having is at a lower pitched sound (electrical?). I've tried to exactly pinpoint the problem but cannot as the PSU and GPU are too close together (really hard even with a rolled up piece of card). All I can say is that this is the first time this problem has occurred. I didn't have any of this with my 560Ti. I'm unable to test the components either as I gave my GPU to a friend who has unfortunately moved away now due to unforeseen circumstances.

This buzz only really occurs under load - tabbed into Games/Heaven Benchmark. It also changes as I change my view onscreen. I recorded this while being tabbed out of the game, tabbed in, moved the mouse about a bit then tabbed out. Apologies for the hoover sound, I used a yeti to record this and it had to be pretty close to catch it well.

PS - My Cooler-master case did not come with the VGA card holder which is shown in the manual, in the contents of the box. Currently my 780 is only being supported by the PCIe slot and one small random screw.

I would really really really appreciate some help and advice. This has put a downer on my pc building experience. D:

Sorry for the long post, thank you very much!

Kind regards,
Qwenty.

To see if it is the GPU or the PSU it looks like your motherboard as onboard graphics so you could take the 780 out and this would possibly tell you if it the PSU or not.

For the RAM havd you checked for a BIOS update. Also you could download and run MEMTEST 86 to check the RAM.

The noise almost sounds like hard drive access. Is it possible to boot the pc and conduct the same test with the Seagate disconnected.

1. Have you updated the BIOS on you motherboard? Newer BIOS's tend to increase memory compatibility.

2. You really need to try and find out what's causing the wine, do you not have another machine you could try the card in? Or have a spare power supply? It's no use using the iGPU as commented above as it won't place any load on the PSU so you won't be able to recreate the power draw of the 780.

Hey guys and thank you for responding. :)

- I managed to flash update my bios via USB and now the XMP profile works like a charm. I never thought of updating it tbh because I'm clueless. xD

- I really don't know what to do regarding the whine. I paid over £400 for this card and have never heard of this whine before till I fired up Borderlands 2.

- Couple of things that may (or may not) be helpful:-

I don't think it would be the HDD because my games are all stored on my SSD at the moment.

The sound of the whine differs as I move the mouse. Could this suggest that it's the GPU?

I am currently studying at university, therefore I don't have access to extra PSU/PC.

Is this actually coil whine btw? As I said earlier, from what I know through research isn't it normally a very high pitched noise?

Kind regards,
Qwenty.

You may also want to look at overclocking that CPU. That K2 will keep your 2500k at 60-62deg when clocked to 4.5ghz.

Sounds like coil whine from psu to me, i had it with an OCZ ZX Series 1250w, could even here that slightly while web browsing and the sound changed while moving the mouse.

Coil whine from the GPU can be from very high frame rates, I notice this in the basic 3D Mark tests and Minecraft menu, try locking your FPS in the Nvidia control panel and enable Triple Buffering.

Thank you for your replies guys. I did actually try enabling vsync when playing Borderlands 2 because I did read about that while researching what it was. It made no difference. :/ Exact same noise.

EDIT - It seems also adjusting the settings you told me to change in the Nvidia panel have helped as well. I would say the noise is now roughly 1/4 to 1/2 quieter, and is just slightly louder than my fans. But anything is better than that racket I had to put up with before. I basically also went in and cranked everything that was more for performance to quality as well haha. :p Running awesome on borderlands now. Could only tell it was there if you properly listened. Compared to as soon as someone would step in my room, you would automatically notice it. xD

Thank you very much! From research, I found out that this doesn't actually cause damage to the component? If not, I think I can deal with it. :P

Thank you everyone, once again.

Have you tried limiting your fps in borderlands 2? If it's pushing extremely high frames (that you don't need) then the coil whine is usually more prevalent. Try limiting your fps to something reasonably high in afterburner or EVGA precision. Unfortunately it's a lottery with gpus as to whether they have bad whine or not. If it's too bad you can always DSR it back to the store at your own expense or push for it be in faulty (ppl don't have a lot of luck with this as the card actually works ok)

EDIT: Sorry, I've as good as repeated what's said above lol on phone at the minute and not reading properly :p
