disconnecting USB devices

after i press the eject icon to disconnect usb device is it safe to remove it?
it says do not connect on my mp3 player after i pressed it :S

The eject key is only for cd/dvd

In order to "unmount" a usb device, you drag it from the desktop to trash (the icon then changes to the eject icon).
