Discreet Modem

Hi all,

My router bit the dust over Christmas, which was not ideal...

However, I decided to take the plunge and ordered a Netgear R7000 Nighthawk AC1900 - which looks very fancy and all; however, one fact that I hadn't taken into consideration when ordering was the fact that it needs a modem between it and the phone line (my previous router accepted the phone line directly).

I've managed to set things up with my old router being the 'modem' for now, but things look messy and I wondered if there was a more discreet option that I could get to make things look tidier and do away with my shonky old router?

Too much festive cheer, not enough time looking at the facts before taking the plunge...

Any advice appreciated!

Are we supposed to assume ADSL because you haven't mentioned it.

If it's ADSL then a DrayTek Vigor 120 is always a good choice.

Other option is to return the Netgear and replace it with something with the ADSL modem built-in. Depends what your return options are.

I was thinking about that too - and doing some proper research for the next purchase....

Any recommendations for an alternative with built-in modem???

There's currently no options for FTTC where I live (middle of nowhere - my Broadband speeds have never been great) - and as much as I like the look of the router and the speed that it allows over the wireless (massive improvement over the ISP provided router); I'm not sure if I could find a different router with a built in modem that could do just as good a job.

A thought (it could be a dim one)

I have in my loft an old Netgear DGN1000; could I just use this as the 'modem' or would that likely have impacts on performance? It will still cost me two plug sockets as opposed to one (if I had a router with in-built modem) but the returns process has been so convoluted (could be a time of year thing...) that I still actually have the router awaiting pickup...

Why not just buy an HG612 off eBay, they are not worth much. They are very stable ADSL and VDSL compatible modems with a very good chipset - good enough for BTO to supply as standard with engineer installs anyway.

While i use an integrated VDSL router myself (same modem chipset as the HG612), i bought an HG612 as a backup as you'd be silly not to with what they are worth.

Will the HG612 allow it's settings to be changed? I'm on Virgin currently so couldn't do that if it was locked to BT somehow.

I've had a few recommendations for other modems; but keep being stalled by negative Amazon reviews about performance when over a certain distance from the exchange, or in the Draytek's case, lifespan - maybe the new one will be better but by the time it comes out they may have actually managed to arrange collection of the router...

Yep, although as standard it is set up for BTO VDSL. You need to unlock it following a simple guide available online :)
