I signed up for an orange.net email address years ago, probably 4 or 5 years ago I'd say when they were pushing the "free" service to anyone who'd listen. Certainly being an orange customer was not a prerequisite.

It was great because they did free text alerts when you got an email, anyway at the time I was with orange but have wandered around lots of networks and still got the alerts. 2 years ago I went back on orange, eventually cancelled the alerts because getting texts about spam isn't very helpful. Not sure if that service is still active.

Anyway, in the meantime I do recall seeing an email about terms changing and the fact that you had to have an orange number to keep the service but I assumed that either a) wouldn't mean me because I signed up before this term was introduced or b) they'd give you a bit of warning at which point I could go and buy a pay as you go sim and all would be fine.

So, I port my number off to o2 on wednesday and the very moment my line moves..

Orange DELETE my email account that i've had for aaaaages.. the bank, egg, paypal, ebay, ocuk and various other forums, all my friends, job agencies, my cv, the LOT.. all have that address and I think its way out of order behaving like this.. its not as if the service was especially robust anyway.

But anyway, just a bit of a warning for anyone else using orange.net basically.

And talk about "close the door on the way out" customer services.. I left for a better deal but I ain't EVER going back to orange!

oh yeah, when I signed up, they didn't have matt@ so I signed up for matt100@ and so my online name was born..

Now they've gone and binned it :(

Is this even legal? At times I've had pretty significant ebay businesses hung around this address??

Meh... at least I get to reset the spam counter

They warned you about new restrictions on a free service and you didn't do anything? Little sympathy, I'm afraid....it's perfectly legal and though it seems harsh, it shouldn't have been unexpected. Bad luck, try calling to see if they'll let you sign up again.

I remember when our Freeserve address stopped working, about 5 years after we stopped using them as an ISP, but by then we didn't use it anyway :p

Yeah I'm not as hopping as I would have been if it was totally out of the blue, the point was I didn't actually sign up for the email as anything to do with a phone.. the service was launched when I already had a phone with them.

Plus I would have figured that if it was supposed to be some sort of benefit of using orange then they might at least have warned me and tried to make me buy something rather than ensuring the fact they annoyed me as much as possible. Hell I would even have paid them for the email address!

Bad luck I guess.

I think it's best for you to sign up free e-mail provider such as google mail. Google mail I'm using is much superior to every webmail provider you could think of and best of all, it is not tied to your number or ISP.

i have all my emails here because I use outlook, I can only presume the emails that were sent since they killed the account just bounced.

also they have a "help"line 07973100439 which is "permanently barred" according to the message you get when you ring it.

gone one better, got my own domain now :p

Tis certainly the way forward. Now the 2nd year of having my own domain.

Just remember to have backup mail facilities. offered free by many companies - i successfully use rollernet.us.

I need them as i host my own mail server on my home connection which is invariably on and off.....

Ta for the warning though - companies that do that are annoying, but completely in their right. - My gfs family have just had their company's backup e-mail addresses terminated from btconnect (their adsl provider) as they cancelled (instead of reducing to pay and go) during their move to france.

You made it sound worse than it is. It could have been worse. At least you had a backup on Outlook. Imagine if you were just using webmail.

ooh sorry!

yes it could have been worse, but its still bloody annoying and tbh I'd have little sympathy for someone using only webmail. Mind you I'd have little sympathy for myself too, I appreciate I'm just ranting.

The Orange.net address is a bit of a joke these days. I wouldn't count on it for anything important. I 'lost' two of my emails last week. Two people emailed me, I didn't get the mail, they didn't get a failure/delay email. A week later these people forwarded me the mail from their sent folders - all seemed in order it just didn't turn up!

The question is what can be counted on? Hotmail? Gmail? Might they not just shut up shop one day? ISP email is no good since it ties you to the ISP... I now use my own domain hosted at my ISP which seems to work pretty well.

@blueyonder.co.uk = the win. ;)

When I moved houses and arranged for BY to transfer my connection + account to the new address, they deleted my email accounts without any warning.

I don't use BY's email so it wasn't an issue, but anyone who does should be warned!

Same happened to me. Annoying, but I was considering changing address anyway due to the amount of spam I was receiving.

I have my own domain - how can I set up e-mail for this?

hMailserver.

Works a dream. Is free. Runs as a service as default. supports imap and pop3. webmail is easy to integrate with NOCC - again free.
