Hi guys,

I've been tidying my main recently and I was wondering....

Is it still necessary/advantageous in anyway to have either of the above ticked? I've currently on a 2TB SN850 nvme :)

I've not done a clean install since Windows 7 and I'm wondering how many legacy settings are still on my system?

Thanks.

The disk compression is still valid, I use on a HTPC that's short of space on it's SSD. If enabled it will slow disk access a little, so only use when your short of space.

Re indexing, it helps file searching, and also searching Outlook email files if you use this. If you have the space it can be enabled.

Only time I ever use compression is for IIS log files on servers. Stops them getting out of hand as they become around 5% of the size.

I wouldn't use it for any normal folders, it slows down the access speed.

Compression on NTFS works inefficiently, it will write the file first uncompressed, then compress and rewrite it, when finished the uncompressed is deleted. So doesnt speed things up like ZFS compression does and will also accelerate nand wear.

The second tick box affects the indexing service, if unticked, only the filename and certain file properties will show up in search results, if ticked (default) it will allow searching inside files. Which has resource overheads as well as potential privacy concerns.
