Disk diagnostic / test software?

I trying to sort out a possible issue with a a 3.7 TB 5,400rpm WD SATA-III HDD that seems to be causing problems.
Using Speccy I can't see anything reported by S.M.A.R.T.
Can anyone suggest anything that will test and/or diagnose issues on such a drive?

There's no point using any diagnostic that doesn't come from the manufacturer. You get a nice positive pass or fail.

All of the third party utilities just seem to create confusion because no one except the manufacturer really knows what the SMART results for a particular drive mean.
