My girlfriend's laptop has just been formatted by school to remove the licensed school software.

So on a fresh windows xp install all we have done is:

set up the wireless internet connection.
update norton internet security
and then to keep norton happy run a full system scan.

during the scan i accidently closed the lid and the pc went into hibernation.
On reboot I get a

"Disk error
Press any key to restart"

*press space bar*

"Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"

Was this caused by hibernating on a virus scan?
Is my only option to recover/ reformat using recvery disk?

Is the hard drive actually being detected at POST?

If so, it could be the MBR has been corrupted - you should be able to fix this using the fixmbr command in the Recovery Console.

If the HDD isn't being detected at boot then you may have knocked it and dislodged one of the cables.

The HDD is set to second in boot priority after cd/dvd
Its connected as the Third IDE Master
And i assume the bios recognises it because it can tell its a hitatchi.

Looks like its recovery console time

EDIT: Typical asus recovery disk doesn't give you the option to use the recovery console. Have to try and dig out a another recovery disk from somewhere.
