I've got Windows Xp and a two or three apps on a 20Gb disk, i've removed loads of stuff, now i'm down to AV and VOIP is all that's left on it, and it's still sitting at 18.5Gb. I've run ccleaner over it, but is there a program i can use to get the disk clutter properly wiped without having to resort to a reinstall of Windows?

I've got 160Gb second disk in there, but I need a quick fix before switching to the bigger disk

Cheers

Turn off System Restore if you haven't already.

If you have a 160GB disk available, could you not just image the smaller drive and move it over?

Use something like Treesize Pro to identify where the space is being taken up.
Have you also looked through your My Documents, Videos, Music folders? Maybe you have some large video clips you can move.
Only other quick fix is to move your page file to your second disk and also disable hibernation if it is enabled.
Sometimes the culprit is not just in programs etc, are there any large files on your desktop too?

Thanks, no videos, no pics, all data is stored ona NAS, I will check systemm restore and hibernation and the two progs suggested.

Pagefile, hibernate file, temp folders in Documents and Settings and Windows errrm and possibly your browser caches. They'd be my first ports of call.

Try running the disk cleanup if they have it in Windows XP, i can't remember if it has it :S

On vista i got back 5.2gb from tempfiles, 3.99gb from hibernation which i don't use and ~300mb from thumbnail previews.

You could also reduced the space the recycle bin takes up by right clicking and going to properties, be careful though any file too big for it i think it'll delete it fully, though it tell you this though.

I think Windows XP assigns 10% of the disk size to recycle bin, so there a significant amout of space there. IF its only a temp solution you can always change it back.

When i run defraggler it is showing a 2.5gb pagefile as being fragmented, is it safe to just delete it?

*asked here instead of starting a new thread as its been mention.

If you have a 20GB drive then it's going to be an old model, which means it will be very slow and will affect your system's performance a lot. Move the OS to the 160GB drive for a performance boost.

disable system restore

what av is it?

norton is dumb and creates its own recycle bin iirc.

and i agree with Mattus^^
