Is there free disk imaging to server software? I want to put a bigger hdd in my computer (that has a mSata drive). So I want to create an image on our server then boot from a USB pen and install the image on the new bigger Hd. Is there any free software that does that?

Macrium Reflect should handle it. It'll create bootable media with network and other drivers included.

Imaging to/from a USB drive is going to be simpler.

What said you had the wrong version of Macrium? Where/when in the process did it say it?

I've been using Macrium for years and have never failed to clone/image the drives I've wanted to. It has sometimes been a bit of a challenge on some hardware, but it has always worked in the end.

I booted from the USB Rescue disk, then I tried to install an image an it said I had the wrong version of the software ! Thanks for your replies.

Windows actually has a system image creator built in and you can choose where the VHD and related files are stored. You can then restore the image using a bootable recovery USB drive that you can also create (it prompts you to create one at the end of the image creation process) or at any other time by starting to type into start "Create a recovery".

Does System image back up include all the software you've installed and files ?

It's an exact clone of your OS drive and you can select other partitions or drives to image to backup also before it starts.

The VHD can then be mounted natively in Windows and browsed as if it were a drive should you wish to pull off individual files etc or just keep the VHD and its related files on the backup location should you ever need to restore it.

Here's the layout:
