ok well ive had ma vista pc about 2 -3 weeks i have a 160GB SATA drive and when i first installed vista and all the programs i have had used 22GB on the drive. Ive not installed a program since and tharefore all the files on the drive add up to 22GB (i store all documents on file server) ive just checked how much space is used on the drive after noticing it going down slowly more and more it says there is 47.5GB used now something is filling it up that doesnt show up in windows i presume it must be something like system restore or something but more than 20GB? Any ideas what it could be and how i stop it taking up so much?

that'll definitely be system restore. i disable it because i prefer to backup what i want, not what windows thinks i should. :)

Cleared temp/installed files?
Cleared temp net files?
Cleared old system restore files?
In XP you can delete old updates, not sure where they're placed in Vista.
Although all that shouldn't mount upto 20GB

just found this in the system restore info

System Restore might use up to 15 percent of the space on each disk. As the amount of space fills up with restore points

That would explain why its so much it must be using the full 15%

Gonna turn it off hopefully windows will return the stolen disk space when i restart :p

Its system restore, it takes up 15% of your drive. To clear them goto explorer, c drive, properties, disk cleanup, files from all users on this pc, more options, click cleanup in the system restore and shadow copies section

never knew it took that much space :S

i just dont use system restore everything is backed up stright away on a external harddrive then anything realy important on cd/dvd so the restore points where useless
