hi guys have you guys had any experience with buying any defragmentation software ? im looking in to possibly buying diskeeper 2010 home or pro edition , do you guys think its really any better than using the defrag software in windows 7 for example or do you know if theres any better software than diskeeper.............also do you think if its worth the money in paying for it ?...............thanks in advance :)

The built in defragger has always done the job to my satisfaction. I certainly wouldn't pay for 3rd party tools for this.

If you are going to pay for defrag software then the best one is Perfectdisk 11 pro it has a 30 day full features trial so you can see if it's worth it or not. There are many free defraging software but none is better.

Or you can save your money, time and effort and stick to the very capable Windows Defrag. Set it. Forget it. No more fragmented drives.

What's wrong with the inbuilt de-fragmentation function in Windows 7?

its the most basic defrag ive ever set eyes on.

i'd rather have one that can optimize my files based on usage , one that can defra on the fly when my computer isnt really doing anything.

can windows defrag even do a bootup defrag to sort out windows locked files?

We use it across all our servers and PC's and its very good. Seems to do a good job of defragging when your CPU is idle so you don't notice its happening behind the scenes.

I don't see the issue here. The only thing which should matter when it comes to defragmentation programs is the end result.

From my perspective, a third-party defragmentation program could cook me a full English breakfast but if the end result is my system is running exactly the same as one which couldn't cook me a full English breakfast, that additional capability is of no benefit to me. All I'm concerned about is making sure my installation is performing to an excellent standard and in my experience, the defragmentation function in Windows Vista / Windows 7 does a perfectly sufficient job of maintaining my installation to that standard, certainly as far as file fragmentation goes anyway.

Have you got any evidence to suggest third-party defragmentation programs with their so called much more advanced capabilities offer a significant performance improvement over the defragmentation functionality in Windows Vista / Windows 7?

Used to use Diskeeper until I realised that constantly running a third-party background process just for defragging is silly. The built-in defragger keeps fragmentation well below the level where it causes a problem, and the occasional run of Defraggler eliminates it completely.

The best thing I ever did to fight disk slowdown was to create a 40GB partition for my OS. Ensures that the OS files are always at the beginning of the disk and makes the OS partition much faster to defrag. At least as effective as fancy defrag software.

I suspect people who think the third party tools are better is entirely due to them being shiny compared to the no-nonsense Windows 7 defrag. I mean seriously, when you have 0-1% fragmentation, what possible, noticeable effect are you ever likely to see between the different products?

If you must use one use Defraggler which is free and thorough (and 64bit).

Don't pay for defrag software... that's just silly.
