display Advise

I currently use a Phillips 26" Wide TV for my current rig.
My PC has died on me a short while ago and I'm speccing up a new PC. I can't check or remember what resolution it was running at.
Would the TV limit the resolution I can play at or is that down to the GPU.
I don't know a lot about displays hence the noobish question.

You are ultimately limited by the monitor yes, it can't display a higher resolution than it has pixels.
