Display driver not responding - OCUK 6870

Yeaahhhh send that back. My replacement EVGA GTX 460 Superclocked will arrive tomorrow, I'll let you know how that compares. It's £5 cheaper and I think it's slightly less powerful than the 6870. However, the 6870 is awful to overclock and the 460 is apparently one of the best cards to overclock, so I reckon I'll be able to at least match the performance of the 6870.

You wont be able to overclock that 460 much if any,The 6870 will still beat it on performance.

I think there are a great deal of folks on this forum (and pretty much every other PC forum) that might well disagree with you here ;)

PS. if it wont hit at least 850 on the core, I'll eat my hat.

I'm new to this whole overclocking thing. Should I just use the EVGA software to increase the core and fan speed? The fan speed is locked at 80% by default so I'll increase that to 100%.

As it's an EVGA card. I would be tempted to try their own OC tool (evga precision ... latest version http://www.evga.com/precision/).

I would try increasing it by 10MHz at a time and do a quick test each time until you start to spot artefacts and then dial it back 10MHz and test more fully. Loop something like 3Dmark11 for a couple of hours and maybe Unique Heaven, then a good bash at Crysis 2 or BF2 (everyone has their own ideas about what constitutes a stable graphics card OC). Obviously need to keep an eye on you temps as you go. Only down side with EVGA's tool, is that I don't think it allows any voltage adjustment. Something that you will need to hit any sort of decent OC. For that it would be best to try Afterburner.

Good luck.

PS. EVGA forums even have a decent OCing guide ... http://www.evga.com/forums/tt.aspx?forumid=22 emmm... maybe their guide is a bit outdated, but it will give you an idea.

Thanks Mikeo, that really helps. I'll let you know how it goes when it arrives. I ordered it with the cheapest postage (DPD Guaranteed Next Day Delivery) on Thursday and it hasn't even left their warehouse yet. So much for guaranteed! I ought to get that postage refunded ;).

@LOAM - I was using the latest Radeon drivers and even tried the latest beta driver, to no avail.

I only ask cause I had epic issues with the 11.8 and driver not responding and especially amdkmdap problems on a 5870 that's been solid for over a year. Put 11.6 drivers back on at the start of Sept and not had one issue since. There's deffo something wrong with the 11.8s imo.

Ofcourse it will hit 850 mate i wasn't saying that,He said it would match the 6870 speed and thats what i disagreed with.

My apologies. It's just not how I interpreted your post. Semantics are such a wonderful thing :)

As to comparing an over-clocked 460 to a stock 6870.... I think they would be very close myself. Which is I think what the OP was getting at.

From personal experience of owning an MSI 460 HAWK OC at 850/1700/4000 I know this is pretty near identical in performance to a stock 470 (identical system otherwise ... both systems built by me). And the following makes interesting reading:

I'm sure the OP will be more than happy with his purchase and can let us know how it performs in his system.

Enjoy.

Just a note in defence of the ATI 6870. I have the MSI 6870 Hawk Twin Frozr III edition and it's been brilliant straight out of the box. Easily overclocked it to 975 MHz and bumped memory up to 1150 MHz without needing to increase the stock voltage.

Perhaps the Vertex card which was on offer here was cheap because it's manufacturing quality was poor...

I've just installed the Sapphire Vapor X version, which is running quite happily at a decent OC. Haven't stress-tested it, but been gaming all weekend without a single problem.

I have no doubt that a well put together 6870 is an excellent card, it's just that these VTX cards are utter pants :p

I'm not going to put that to the test, though, as I've a GTX570 (the EVGA Classified :D) coming tomorrow.

Any excuse for an upgrade ;)

How come there's no reviews of the VTX 6870 on the OCUK main page? I would have thought somebody with negative experiences might have fed this back so that OCUK could look into this. I wouldn't have thought they'd want their name attached to a low quality product...

Hadn't occurred to me. I'll get onto that now.

Although the man I spoke to on the phone did acknowledge that a lot of the cards have been sent back, so they are aware.

EDIT: Review submitted.

I do just want to stress that not all the cards are having issues, I for one have had none, I played 8 hours straight of Deus Ex yesterday.

Saying that I can understand why the 3 or 4 people who have mentioned problems in the thread would be put off from buying a VTX branded card again, (the same would apply to any manufacturer).

And anybody that has been lowering speeds should just send it back while you can, if it doesn't work at stock, it doesn't work.

Good luck guys hope you get it sorted.

No disrespect intended. But low scoring reviews don't always get printed! Well the only two that I wrote never did and I considered them pretty balanced reviews. I've had loads of other printed but they were all 4/5 star ones. Their site, they can obviously do what they want of course :)
