Display driver stopped responding - 7970 issues

Hey there.

Today when I open WoW the screen freezes up and after maybe 20 seconds or so I get the message that the display driver has stopped responding and has been restarted.

Other games appeared to be working fine - Mass Effect 2, Starcraft 2, SWTOR (although SWTOR feels sluggish but I don't know if its my mind playing tricks on me as there is no fps counter). I Tried rebooting the system but this problem persisted, so I thought I would update the driver.
I used the most recent beta driver 12.x 8.96 feb28. Now I could get into WoW however the frame rate was just 25 fps. I'm usually between 75-100 on my 7970 at 2560x1600.
I thought that perhaps the low frame rate was down to the drivers being beta ones. So I went back to AMD's most recent official driver, 12.2 Pre-certified driver. Still the frame rate was just 25fps.
Knowing how shoddy AMD are with drivers I decided to uninstall that one and just use the driver supplied on the original cd. The one I had been using when the display driver crashes suddenly started - and once again the display driver crashes whenever I try to open the game. Prior to today I had been using these drivers fine for the 6 weeks or so I have had the card.
This happens on both the 32 and 64bit WoW clients.

Doe's anybody know how I can fix this? Seems to have come on suddenly and I am stumped as to why.

Display driver stopped responding.
This is a random problem many people have had with both ATI & nvidia cards with all different spec computers...

Installing different version GPU drivers or reinstalling the same GPU drivers has sometimes fixed just problem for me

Ty for the help Final8y :)
Its set to 16288mb

When WoW freezes up and causes the display driver to stop responding I also get a message about "desktop window manager has stopped working and was closed". If this is of any help to anybody

Is your memory 4x4 or 2x8? Not that it matters but try memtest86+ I have read on many forums that memory has caused this issue.

The logical thing to do is eliminate software issues first THEN work on hardware.
Rebuild's usually cure most software issues ;)

Hey, I am currently having the same issues mate. Even locking up whilst I am attempting to type this. I have tried driversweep in safe mode and installed the beta/current drivers in safe mode also to try fix this, with no avail.

Really strange :/
