Display driver stopped responding

So this issue is starting to really drive me nuts. been happening for a few months and I've had enough.

Card is a Gigabyte R9 280X WindForce 3x

Will be quite happily playing a game when suddenly the display will freeze for a few seconds then Windows will display a message in bottom right corner with yellow triangle saying "Display driver stopped responding and has successfully recovered."
depending on the game, it may crash itself or just sit in the background until I end it with task manager.

It did blue screen once the other day but that's the first time I've see it doing that. Error was Video_Memory_Management_Internal

Issue does not seem to be game specific and I've just reinstalled Windows 10 with no improvement. Before I look at starting a RMA process on it, anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks

Any overclocking of the GPU? This the biggest problem with display driver stopped responding.
Next would be bad RAM, even try DDU display driver uninstaller and clean install latest AMD 16.3 driver.

Try downclocking the gpu first and check temperatures. Then try upping the power limits. If they fails roll back drivers or if you can test in another pc. Maybe try uninstalling any msi afterburner type oc programs if all else fails.

GPU has remained at stock speeds since I got it.
I even tried under clocking it to try resolve this but no joy.

I've been able to recreate it with different pairs of the 4 RAM sticks so from what I've tested, it would need to be at least two dodgy sticks out of the four to be the cause. I can try reducing it down and testing the 4 individually if that is a likely cause. Memtest didn't return anything when ran against the set of 4.

I would have thought the recent windows reinstall which then got the latest drivers installed first would rule out the need for running DDU. I have a feeling I did try it previously though.

People suggest DDU because it removes any dodgey drivers windows throws on there, then it stops windows trying to install them again, so it lets you put only the drivers you want on there.

I would remove any overclocking or overlay software and just have the system running stock settings and jump in a game.

The problem is that the error your getting can be caused my loads of things, including cpu and ram so i would say ya need to try another GPU in the system to rule them out before ya send it back.

I would advise that you try an older version of the driver, it is possible a feature has been enabled in the current driver which has then highlighted the fault in your card.

cheers for the suggestions.

So i put the card into another machine where the only common component was the graphics card. This was a fresh Windows 10 install running no overclocking or overlay software. Only thing installed was Uplay and The Division. AMD drivers installed were those Windows put on by default.

Crash still occurs.

So I ran DDU and removed the installed drivers and put on the latest v16.3.1 version.
Managed to get an hour of play without issue before I ran out of time. It was always quite random when it would occur so will try again further on Friday and see how it goes.

In the meantime I've put the card back in the main machine and done the same with DDU and v16.3.1. Game crashes as before so that's not a solution on there.

Checked GPU temp at time of crash and it was reporting 66 degrees so i don't think that's anything to worry about.

Dug out an old 6870 card so will give that a try as well and see how it goes although not looking forward to the low quality gfx :)

Sounds like the GPU is faulty to me. When did you buy it? If it's still in warranty I'd start thinking about RMAing it.

I got the card from OCUK May 2014 so should still be under warranty.
Will contact Gigabyte and see what they say.

Sounds like youve done all you can to test it, i would get it sent back now if its still under warranty. Hopefully their tests will give the same results and they will get it fixed/replaced.
