Display port not as good as DL-DVI?

So recently, I was doing a little bit of research in regards to my PC monitor cables, it was made apparent to me through various threads, videos and so on that DP (Display Port) is the best cable out there at the moment, I thought I would test it out and I went ahead and got one.

I've been on Dual-link DVI for quite some time now and well, the quality of Display Port in comparison to DL-DVI is well, worse? It seems more washed out, it seems as if the gamma/brightness is turned up more when it isn't.

Is this normal? if I could provide you a picture, I would.

I got both cables from Amazon, both very highly rated, lots of reviews, both 4/5* and above, the DVI cable was around 3-4 pounds less and it seems to have a better picture.

What gives?

Uhm, they are both digital connections. Neither is 'better' than the other, you are not going to get some magic IQ increase by swapping cables. They have different technical specification and bandwidth. The only way one is better than the other is the maximum refresh rate/resolution that can be supported, which DP wins out on.

Are you sure your monitor is not configured differently per port?

This^

It's all bandwidth related really and DP wins that department hence why newer techs like gsync require it because of the higher bandwidth required to push the refresh rates / resolutions that commonly comes with the tech. If you compare them side by side at 1080p 60hz they will be identical but if you compared them at 144hz 1440p or maybe 3440x1440 you would see that the dvi cable would have trouble.

I'm using it on a 120hz monitor, 1920x1080p, as I said previously the older cable, the DVI cable had better colour/gamma etc or that's how it seemed and it seems that the DP has more washed out colours/gamma/brightness etc.

I don't think so, it's a brand new card so I doubt that's the problem or I hope not anyway.

What graphics card do you have? It seems unlikely there would be any difference as said above both are digital connections and DP should be better.

My new monitor (1080p Asus thingy) looked really washed out next to my old one (1440p U2711) but after a couple of beers they looks fine next to each other and I actually kinda prefer the brightness of the Asus. Maybe you need beer?

Maybe I do mate, maybe I do.

It's the 970 btw.

As other people said, you probably adjusted the monitor settings when using DVI but haven't done the same adjustments for DP.

I tried using those exact settings, but it just doesn't look the same on my monitor, I'll try restarting and re-applying the settings and then see what happens from there on out.
