Display port or DVI

Have just ordered a Dell 3008FPW which will be connected up to a pair of ATI4870 x2 2mb cards in crossfire.

Can anyone tell me whether there is an optimal connection for this configuration and if so why?

Thanks for all responses.

DisplayPort is newer, offers more bandwidth and supposedly the input lag you would see when having DVI is eliminated.

DisplayPort is essentially HDMI - but with the benefit of it being "cheaper" ie there's no royalty to pay for selling the DisplayPort products in comparison with HDMI

DVI is the equivalent of HDMI too, only without the sound signal, video quality is the same though. The lag youre talking about is due to the refresh rate of the screen, not the cable. Display port is for all intents and purposes the same quality as both HDMI and DVI, just a different connector

It's actually nothing like HDMI, both HDMI and DVI use a legacy scanline technique to send the data (it's sent line by line, frame by frame - exactly how VGA used to work). This is a problem as you need to keep really tight timing to ensure everything works properly and this therefore limits bandwidth and hence resolution and refresh rates. DisplayPort is a modern packet based display link - think of it as ethernet for displays if you will.

Added bonus is that daisy chaning 4 24" displays through a single connection is technically possible according to the spec. :D

I was meaning in terms of quality, not actual technology used.
Displayport = 8.64 Gbit/s
HDMI (1.3) = 8.16 Gbit/s
DVI = 7.92 Gbit/s
As you see they're all roughly the same, certainly not enough difference for anyone to notice

Thanks for responses. So is there likely to be any discernible difference between connecting via DVI and connecting via display port?

Not at the moment, however, in the not too distant future DisplayPort will offer you the increased capabilities I wrote about, notably daisy chaning multiple displays from a single output.

At the risk of asking a stupid question why does the monitor need a Display port or DVI connection to the PC and a USB connection? Is this purely for the built in card reader?
