hi guys
i am using the Dell U2311H Monitor, have my PC connected to it using a DVI cable.
Now I want to add a PS3, using an HDMI cable... problem is there's no HDMI port on this monitor, only a DisplayPort one... anything I can do with it? any adapter or something? I tried using google, saw some adapters but some ppl say it won't work...

My plan is:

Monitor's DisplayPort -> Some HDMI adapter <-> HDMI cable <-> PS3

Thanks

Hi there, may I ask what graphics card you are using?

If your card has a displayport (or mini-displayport) output then you can connect that to your monitors displayport connection. That leaves the DVI-D connection free for the PS3 (which will just need a standard HDMI to DVI adapter, or a cable like this).

i picked up a adapter thinking it would work for eyefinity, i was wrong about that, but it does work

its a male dp > female hdmi
could post you it for 3 quid if you want, but it i dont know if itll convert hdmi to dp, but it deffo works for dp to hdmi..

Unfortunately the OP needs an active adapter that goes the other way (HDMI>DP) and these adapters are uni-directional.

After a quick hunt, you are looking at spending ~£60 on such an adapter.

With that price, it's almost worth selling up the GTX 570 and picking up a HD 6970 2GB (which has native mini-DP ports built in and usually a mini-DP to DP adapter included with the card).

That said, it would be much cheaper and generally less hassle to pick up a 2-input DVI switch, and a HDMI to DVI adapter.

cmndr_andi thanks for your help
i was thinking:
i will plug my PC to the VGA port on the monitor, and the PS3 to the DVI port, what do you think? sounds easy and cheap to me
about the PC -> VGA - will it effect the image quality in games in any way? my PC is being used for gaming mostly...
thanks!

The quality difference is slight, but when I directly compared the VGA and DVI inputs on my Dell 2209WA I could see a slight difference (with the DVI signal looking slightly sharper).

As a result I would suggest keeping both signals digital if you possibly can.

Have a search for "HQ DVI and Audio Switch" and see what you see. Then couple it with this adapter and you will be sorted (connect the output of the switch to the DVI port on your monitor).
