Display resolution

I've just upgraded from a 4:3 to 16:10 Widescreen display, but my Mac Mini (Intel) only offers me 4:3 resolutions. My setup doesn't have working DDC so the Mac can't tell what monitor I have. Without spending over £100 on new cabling I have no way to fix the DDC problem.

How can I get 16:10 resolutions from the Mac? (specifically I want 1440x900)

I found a utility - DisplayConfigX - that'll do it, but I'd rather explore free options first.
