Display won't stay off

Hi all,

Does anybody know why my I can't turn my display off (and have the computer still on) without it popping back on again after about 5 seconds? I'm trying to run the speakers for white noise while asleep but the laptop won't keep its screen turned off (using the function key for that). It used to work on my old windows 7 laptop but windows 8 as usual is a pain in the a**e.

It's not the touchpad, by the way. I tried disabling that, and it seemed to work to begin with, but now even with it disabled the screen is coming back on.
