Hi Guys,

I have a weird problem with my LG Flatron 31MU97 31" True 4K

At the weekend I bought the LG curved 34" for gaming on, and I moved my 4k screen to the side for photography and stuff, for this I bought a 3 meter Displayport cable (rated for 1.2) to discover that when I have DP 1.2 enabled, and the monitor running at it's native res of 4096x2160 the screen flickers, goes blank, and makes an audible banging sound.

I initially thought the cable was faulty, so I purchased a 3 meter standard displayport cable, to experience the exact same symptoms, hence ruling out the cable

I also tried the monitor on a 2 meter cable (as it's been fine like this for 4 months) to discover that it's still fine.

so is there some sort of issue with running displayport 1.2 over more than 2 meters that I'm not aware of, or some sort of fix?

thanks for any help :)

The spec is for "3 meters for full bandwidth transmission" to be compliant with the standard but in reality you will generally only get that on "very high quality" cables if your pushing the bandwidth limits with 4K or high refresh rates. Generally I recommend 1.8m to be safe with those kind of uses.

I've literally got 2 "identical" display port cables one about 1cm longer than the other and one works fine for 120+Hz/4K stuff the other is just a flickery mess.

wow, didnt realise this, was going to go 4k in the next few months, but im currently using a 3M dvi cable for 1080p and would need a 3k displayport cable, sounds like that might not go so well :(

I managed to fix the problem - I managed to arrange things so a 2m cable would JUST reach, as I got no joy whatsoever with the 3M one.

interestingly it did work ok at 30hz at 3840x2160 but when I tried to do anything more than that, ie 60hz, or the native res of 4096x2160, it just turned into a mess...

At least i'm sorted anyway - there does seem to be a lot of people suffering from this same issue though,

I've had no problem with 3m or 5m displayport for 4k or 1440p 144hz. I guess it depends on the quality and type of displayport cable you use. I bought some decent cables.

Well, the first 3m cable I bought was quite a decent one £16 worth, and was fully rated for DP 1.2; http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CB-002-CG OCUK don't actually sell a better one..

The cheapo cable I bought, is no better or worse,

What cable are you using, out of curiosity?

If you visit the rainforest and search "cables 4 all displayport" you will find them. They specify 4k, gold plated etc and are chucky stiff cables. Unless i have been lucky twice i have had zero issues with my nvidia gpu's.
