Hi

My old Graphics card (HD6750) died recently but I have a Dell WD19 usb-c dock that i would like to use but my Motherboard (Msi Z97 Gaming9) does.t support DisplayPort Alt-Mode over USB-C

My question is would there be any advantage to me using this dock if i bought a PCI Express card that supports DisplayPort Alt-Mode over USB-C?

I have a i7 4790k that at the moment im using its graphics output to display on a 49" TV using HDMI and 26" TV using Displayport out, the PCI Express card im looking at requires the Displayport out of the PC into the card so it can send the signal over USB-C

I use my PC solely for Music Production so graphics anit my priority, what i would like to know is would i gain much performance on my CPU if i wasn't using its graphics output?

What confuses me a little here is the card requires Displayport out so technically wouldn't i be still using the graphics output?

Thanks for any help.

You're making this far more complicated than necessary. Instead of IGP -> MB's DP/HDMI -> Screen, you'll be going IGP -> MB's DP/HDMI -> USB-C with DP alt mode PCIe add-on card -> Dock -> Dock's DP/HDMI -> Screen. I can't se any benefit in doing this for desktops.

USB-C with DP alt mode doesn't have any display hardware natively. hence why it needs to connect to a GPU (either the IGP or discrete GPU). In laptops this is usually wired internally, but for desktops this is far less common hence why the PCIe add-on card requires you to connect it to your GPU via DP.

As for if using the IGP affects CPU performance, generally no, it doesn't in most use cases. If both the CPU and IGP is on full load then both will fight over the power limits, but for music production that will never happen.
