Displayport and mini displayport

I've got a specific and a more general question. Generally - is there any real difference between displayport and mini displayport apart from connector size?

Specifically, does anybody know if this actually has 2 mini displayports as the specs say, or 1 regular displayport as it looks in the pic? (I've also seen what appears to be the same card on a competitors website which lists it as having 1 regular displayport connection)

The picture seems to show 1x HDMi and 1x displayport of some sort as well as the 2x DVI? it's not a particularly great picture. What does the Asus website say?

Reference 6850s are supposed to have 2 mini displayport, 1 HDMI and 2 DVI, the Asus ones could be using a picture of a 5 series card.

There's also no difference between MiniDP and DP other than the connector, the small connector of MiniDP is just to allow the ports to be fitted in small spaces, like in the case of my graphics card, 6 of them, which with any other display output, you'd only be able to fit 3 maximum.

this business of mini-DP is a step back in terms of more general DP adaptation. hopefully from now on, it's all mini-DP for outputs and DP for inputs.

You can get 1.8m mini DP to DP cables for about £6, I'd definitely call that cheap, well cheapish.

Where from? I'd want something shorter, but this would be ideal for me, freeing up my MDP->DVI connector to stay on the end of a HDMI cable on my TV.

Bought a star tech mini dp to dp cable in the UK for my HIS 6970 to Dell P2310H and it doesnt work.

Might be just a faulty cable , sometimes works for a few seconds, but havent sent it back for replacement yet. Had seen other reports of some cables working and some not, so ended up ordering an ATI officially certified mini dp - dp dongle and using the existing display port cable i used on my 5870 and thats fine.

I couldnt find anywhere in the UK with certified ones in stock, the one i bought in the end was the

My friend has a Startech one, and it works perfectly fine, so it sounds like you've got a borked cable Neil.

Well I'm not really any the wiser after looking at Asus' website (also saw a sapphire one elsewhere saying miniDP but sapphire's site says normal DP). If there's no practical difference then I'll just buy one and hope for the best, am happy to use DVI for now anyway. Thanks for the replies all.

I had to get 2 Mini to normals for my 6970 card, also for some reason the monitors are also feeding power back to the motherboard via the DP ports. So when I power my PC off the motherboard is still fully light :S
