Displayport-VGA adapter resolution issue.

I have a cheapy displayport to VGA adapter, and it's not reporting the correct monitor information back to my computer (I think), so I cannot set the correct resolution on my monitor.

Is there any way of forcing W7 to run the monitor at 1680x1050 or do I need one of these with a dvi-vga adapter as well?

VGA is analogue so i don't think there can be any communication about correct resolutions, its just your graphics card putting whatever you say out to the monitor. Custom resolutions can usually be done in your graphics drivers (nVidia control panel, Catalyst etc)

I'm on Catalyst, but I can't find anywhere to set the custom res. It offers me the same presets W7 does though.

Unfortunately this seems to be the only way :\ If you open the registry editing program (regedit) and go to File-> export all and make sure "All" is selected in the bottom left then save a backup of your registry you can easily double click to restore it if anything goes wrong! Just follow the tutorial :)

That appears to only work on the old Radeon cards, not the Radeon HD series and above. :(

Yeh latest drivers etc. I think the issue is just the adapter. It does appear to be physically damaged and thinking about it, I've always had issue with it recognising the right resolution.

I take it this monitor only has a VGA connection?

Firstly can't you use a DVI to VGA adapter?

Secondly try installing the driver for your monitor.

If those don't work then try forcing the resolution.

Right click on the desktop and select Screen Resolution.

Click on Advanced Settings.

Click on the Monitor tab.

Untick the box for "Hide modes this monitor cannot display".

You should now be able to select different resolutions.

Try not to pick one your monitor doesn't support.

Yes, VGA in only.

I need the DP adapter because the other two ports are already full of monitors, I have 3.

I've inspected the adapter and it appears at some stage I cut the casing down to stop it fouling on my case, and there's some circuit board poking out, which might explain the blurring and why it (at some point) stopped recognising monitors. Tried two monitors and it won't pick up the correct res.

Think I'll get one of these new adapters. If it doesn't fix the issue then it'll get used up when I get my third 28" for eyefinity anyway. :)

I did look at unblocking the blocked resolutions, but it was greyed out. I think because it's picking it up as "Generic non-pnp monitor".

Cheers for your help guys.

Your issue then would seem to be trying to run 3 monitors with a damaged/cheap adapter.

If you wish to run 3 monitors then you need to use an active (powered) DP adapter for the third monitor. These cost ~£20-£25.

You can't use a DVI adapter with a DVI to VGA converter as the adapter is DVI-D so it provides a digital output only.

OcUK don't currently sell a DP to VGA adapter.

AMD provide a list of approved adapters here.

Wish I'd seen that reply earlier...

Ordered one of these this morning: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-057-HS

I hope it works. If it won't run with the DVI-VGA adapter in there as well, I can use it to run one of my DVI monitors, then use the DVI-VGA adapter and VGA monitor from the graphics cards native DVI output? That's worked fine before, and I guess this DP-DVI adapter can actually power a DVI monitor, so hopefully all will be fine.

It won't work with a DVI to VGA adapter but, as you say, you can run a DVI monitor from it and then use one of the DVI connectors on the graphics card with a DVI to VGA adapter.

That'll do for now then. Cheers for your help, much appreciated. :)

In fact it works to my advantage. My graphics card has DVI, DP and HDMI outputs so when I get a third 28" they'll all be running on a digital connection, happyface!
