How do you dispose of dead batteries normally?

When I was living in UK, I just used to throw them in the bin. Actually, I have been doing the same out here, but today I noticed for the first time a battery disposal bin at my local supermarket. I don't seem to remember seeing any of those in UK.

Aye, councils are much more concerned with complaining about how bad people are at recycling than at actually providing facilities for people to recycle stuff.

No money to be made in actually providing facilities. Just for stinging you for fines when your bin overflows. Or you have to take it to the tip yourself. either way it's less money for them.

You guys have pretty serous moans about councils and rubbish. Glad I don't live where you live. :p

Ours is pretty good to give them there due. weekly collections with decent provisions for recycling. Common sense on things like bin lid being a little open and rubbish is never left if bin is to full.

Borders Council actually do something well although it could be argued its the only thing they do well.

fortnightly rubbish collection. Which just isn't enough for most house holds. Let alone the stench in summer. Stupid plastic boxes for cardboard which goes all down the street with the slightest bit of wind and the council wont even clean it up.
And they don't even collect plastic bottles.

Ours is weekly. We are supplied with two wheely bins, one for general rubbish and one for garden waste(with composter also supplied for those who want it) and two different coloured bags. One bag for cardboard/paper and the other for all plastics and tins.

Wednesday they collect general wheely bin
Thursday they collect garden wheely bin
Friday they collect the two bags of recycling.

The local tip collects and has separate areas for pretty much anything I can think of including batteries, waste oil, rubble, wood etc.

Also the bins for collecting Glass and clothes are dotted around and hardly anybody is more than a five minute walk from one.

Have to say when I hear stories from some people on here I appreciate our service even more.

See now I think the wheely bin idea is brilliant, they have loads of space so could be collected every 2 weeks if necessary, and they won't blow over cos they are massive. Unlike the little green boxes we have that act as on-ground kites for the wind...

Why don't they just have the same scheme all over the country? Got me...

But it's not enough space and absolutely stinks in the summer.

They should make smaller wheelie bins and collect them everyweek. Whilst collecting much more recyclable goods.
South glos is pretty good.

Black wheelie bin every other week for rubbish
Green wheelie bin for cardboard and garden/food waste.
Black box for bottles, cans, newspaper.

But even they don't collect plastic.

We have 3 wheelie bins now, one for normal rubbish, one for garden waste (cut grass, whatever), and an one for recyclable plastic and cardboard etc. Luckily we have more than enough room to store them round the back of the house! I'm not sure how people get on who haven't got a driveway/garden front or back.

I tend to take my dead batteries to the local tidy tip when I've got a load together, they have a container there for them, also can take car batteries there. Usually leave it till we've got a load of stuff together to go up there, papers, glass, whatever. Don't usually bother making a special trip!
