Dispute with neighbours over some damp/damaged roof

Bit of history first.

In 2015 I spotted damp in my bathroom and it must have been coming from roof which is shared with next door (victorian house) lots of work done trying to sort it, from reprinted Ridge tiles, replaced slates, including some on their side, the roof continued to leak so last year had the shared chimney removed which they agreed to and I paid for myself.
Just before Christmas it was still leaking so hired some more roofers, but apparently they have damaged his side of the roof and now he has damp (they obviously can't prove this)
HE asked me to pay the bill for £250 which included having his gutter cleaned.
I paid him £240 as I don't think paying for his gutters to be cleaned is for me to pay.
This is where the dispute starts.
His wife came round having a go at me as I didn't pay the extra £10 and saying "its a good job her husband isn't home" ( a threat?) when I refused on the grounds above she said "then you can pay for the redecoration in the room with damp" I refused, she then says "see you in court"

What are your thoughts?

I wouldn't have given them the money in the first place.

if the roofers did cause the damage the problem is with them, they have insurance for this reason.

Sounds like you have a battle on your hands. Unless the woman is just bat **** crazy and when the husband comes home he just tells her to STFU.

good luck

Don't think he will tell her that.

As I say there is no proof they did damage the roof, I'll post some pics soon.

As the roof is over 100 years old and we just have open fields at the back we get battered by weather.

Is she basically saying the redecorating costs for the bathroom will be a tenner?

You've paid to repair the problem with their roof?

If anyone is liable its the second roofing company who should have assessed and either fixed it or told him to jog on. Thats what their public liability insurance is for.

They may have being doing a job for you, your instructions would have been "Fix my roof". The fact they knackered next doors is the roofers and next-doors problem.

They can do one!

This. Though you shouldn't have paid the £240 as this may be seen as you accepting responsibility.

The roofers work could have got debris into the neighbours guttering so including for this in your bill is fair enough

I dunno what she can do legally, your agreement with her husband was to pay £250 to cover costs so imo that is what you should pay and that is what they should accept

I'm getting some roofers up to repoint some roof tiles/ridges when it gets a bit warmer...

Whilst I'll have a quick word with the neighbour to see if they want theirs done at the same time, if they decide not to then I'm not going anywhere near their side of the roof.

Just has the potential to cause more issues further down the line.

My thoughts are since its the wife coming around doing the threats, is that her husband is beta and she wears the trousers, being petty over £10 is a woman thing and wants to wear your trousers as well by you submitting and paying £10 so she can buy a bottle of prosecco with it. She is bluffing and more likely you will go to court if your frame is weaker than hers.

Not sure I would have paid the money in the first place but if I had I would have just paid the extra tenner to avoid any issues such as this.

"Give me ten pounds or pay to redecorate my room!"

She sounds like a daft chancer.

Saying that if they couldn't prove the damage then why are you handing over £240 in the first place, and as someone has pointed out even if they could prove it it's not your issue it's your roofers and their insurances issue.
