Not sure what is going on but my machine keeps losing my spare Seagate 120Gb ide drive, this is starting to happen mostly after the pc comes back from Standby mode, but has also happened twice while the machine has just been idle for a few hours.

Also probably not connected but Auto play on my dvd and cd writer drives is not working.

System specs

Mobo Asus A8N5X nforce4, AMD Athlon 3500+ 64 processor, 1 Gb corsair matched DDR ram, System drive Hitachi 160GB Sata.

IDE driver Ms 5.1.2535.0: Sata driver the same as ide.

IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers

NVIDIA nforce4 Serial ATA controller (listed twice) driver version: 5.10.2600.666

Primary IDE channel driver version: 5.1.2600.2180 Ms dated 2001.

Secondary IDE channel, driver version: Same as primary IDE

Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE controller, driver version: Same as primary IDE

I have reinstalled XP about 4 weeks ago when I installed the new Sata drive.

Plus i have noticed that the machine is very sluggish for about 5 -10 mins after cold boot or after stand by. eg: my computer will take about 30 seconds to open, but once opened and closed it will then open more or less instantly.

Any help greatly appreciated.

tried using a different ide slot?

Hi Nick,

The only other ide slot is the secondary one and that is in use by the dvd and cd drives.

Incidentally i have sorted out the "Autorun" problem, just needed to change a value in the registry.

When you lose the drive, is it lost from BIOS? You could download PC wizard which tells you what hardware is being read. My guess is its possibly an intermittently faulty drive/cable or IDE interface. If you move to other ide port, does the problem still happen? You could share it with your dvd for the time being.

Thanks guys,

I will have to wait and see, as so far fingers crossed it has not done it in the last 12 or so hours.

Some good things to investigate if necessary Thanks.

It has also been suggested on another forum that the drive may be dying!
