Does anyone have any expierience of distance learning?

I am looking at partaking in a course run by Jodrell Bank / University of Manchester, the course is a part time astronomy course, the synopsis is as follows.

The course provides an astronomical perspective on our cosmic origins from the big bang to the development of intelligent life and SETI. The syllabus includes a general introduction to astronomy concentrating on the origin of the chemical elements in the big bang, stars and supernovae; the formation of the solar system; the conditions necessary for life to develop; the search for life on other planets; the discovery of extrasolar planets; and SETI - the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
How do these courses offer by the University compare to the likes of Learn direct etc, are they more reputable and of a better content.

I would being the course for no other reason than personal gain, I have studied anything for the best part of 12 years but Im prerry confident I could pick it up so to speak.

Has anyone here took a course like this, if so what were your opinions of it etc?

I here they are quite good I think University of Central Lancashire do something similar. But they're not really designed as a University alternative, rather a course for the "interested ameteur".

If you want to learn something like what you would at a traditional university looks at the physical science course at the Open University. I studied with the OU in the past and couldn't fault them.

Cheers

The "Interested amateur" pretty much sums it up to be honest. I have never thought about the OU to be honest but thinking about it now I could see myself doing the course above and then maybe going onto something with the OU.
