Wondering if anybody has played any of the Distant Worlds series?

I have Endless Space and StarDrive, so looking for something else like these, so there's this new game coming out Distant Worlds- Shadows, which looks great, but I have never played any of those games in this series.

Pro/con?

I haven't played this at all and to be honest I hadn't even heard of Distant Worlds until now. Having just now looked at a few reviews of Distant Worlds and Legends in particular I'm sorely tempted to give it a whirl though.

Review of the Legends :

"For people who never played these kind of games, that is to say: 4X, grand-scale, highly complex, space empire building games then Distant Worlds Legends is the perfect game for you to make your entrance."

Review of Shadows (in beta but just around the corner) :

By the look of it it's not going to be cheap though as it looks like you need Distant Worlds, Return of the Shakturi and then add Legends.

I'm a big advocate of DW, its a bit niche and so carries quite a price tag but I can safely say in terms of hours it's my most played game.

Yes it's complex and the learning curve steep buts it thoroughly rewarding.

I've been playing 4x since MoO and I'd say DW (with Legends) is the best 4X experience going.

It has a lot to offer; massive research tree, detailed ship design, massive universe that feels alive and one of the better diplomacy systems.

It also has a very granular automation system that allows you to nurse yourself through the early play through. I think there's about 50 automation options, so micromanagement can be thinned out.

Gonna have to save up for the games.... But they do look very nice. Or just maybe I can convince the wife that these games would be much better than her buying some of her things.. hmmmm

This is pretty much the only reason I haven't picked it up, even though i know I will enjoy it, when the latest expansion comes out the whole lot will probably cost £80  .

Hold fire for the release of "Shadows" (~1 week) because they've promised a decent promotion.

If it's anything like the last one it'll be 33% off.

Just an FYI you can now get the complete package, base game + 3 expansions for £61.29 which is a 40% discount.

Or if you get DW + 2 expansions (up to Legends) it's £43.31 which is a lot less than I originally paid and pretty decent pricing.

Rather expensive, but the best of the 4x games IMO. Plenty of mods as you'd expect too, you'll certainly get your money worth when you get into it.

You'll play it for 3-4x longer than even a long AAA title, at least.

So if you look at it from a 'per hour perspective', it does represent value for money.

Anybody bought Shadows?
Looking to buy into DW and was wondering if buying Shadows was worth it?
Not sure playing a pirate is my bag but it looks like the expansion might improve the base game?
