I know there a few decorators, painters who lurk on here, need some professional advice, about distemper paint, NOT the Canine Distemper.

Got a large ceiling, plus a long hallway ceiling which has been painted with emulsion, which is now peeling due to the original distemper underneath.

Had to strip four other ceilings because of the peeling paint, been using 'Artex Stabilex' to seal the powdery & porous ceilings before repainting.

Is there any other product you can used, instead of Artex Stabilex, which is £35 a 5ltr can, used two cans so far., will need another two cans I thinks.

Using PVA will not work, it's totally unsuitable on distemper.

Didn't realise it was made from rabbits

The best way however, to is to soften it and scrape it off. This can be done by coating it with wallpaper paste until it can soak up no more. Paint on the paste for 30 minutes until the last coat you put on stays wet for ten minutes. Leave it for those ten minutes and add some more. Leave for a further ten minutes then start to scrape off with a normal paint scraper.

Stripping the old emulsion isn't the problem, it's sealing the ceiling prior to repainting it.

Did think about totally replacing ceiling, but found every ceiling was affected, so thought stripping was cheaper, didn't realise the cost of the artex stabiliser & amount used, every ceiling needed two coats of stabiliser, before repainting

Nope!

Tried that, ended up having to strip new emulsion, as it bubbled & blistered.

It's either the old distemper, or something in the old plaster, the ceilings that have been sealed with Artex stabiliser have a perfect finish now.
