distilled water vs Coolant which is better whats the difference

all i know about distilled water is De-ionized water is that correct ?

Distilled water is not the same as De-ionized.

I use De-ionized water with Mayhems XT-1 150ml Clear Coolant or coloured - make's up to 3 litre's and
Benefits-
More efficient heat transfer then vegetable extract
Easier to pump, especially at low temperatures.
Less volume for the same freeze protection.
Has been tested and classified as Non-Toxic by an EPA certified laboratory.
Additive has very little effect on heat transfer or antifreeze performance.
Readily biodegradable (90% over ten days) and will not remain in the environment or bio-accumulate.
Synergistic corrosion inhibitors to protect metals commonly found in such systems that contain mild & stainless steel, aluminium, copper, brass and cast iron and plated products.
Contains scale and biological inhibitors to help prevent fouling – thus promoting long operational life and high thermal efficiency.
Exhibits super-cooling characteristics and mixtures containing in excess of 50% by volume and they do not freeze solid.
Safe to use with Mayhems Dyes
Child Safty Cap fitted as standard

Coolant is better.

Distilled water=/= De-ionised

Distilled:
Made from boiling water and collecting the condensed steam. The water is without mineral salts or impurities, as that stays in the original container where the water was boiled. It is without organic material and is electrically non conductive until it loses its purity, which can happen over time. Prone to algae growth if left to itself. Also prone to becoming an electrolyte and assisting galvanic corrosion when it becomes impure over time. More expensive than de-ionised but cheaper than coolant.

De-ionised:
Resins are used to react with impurities and basically a series of chemical reactions leaves practically all mineral impurities in the resin. Organic materials are not completely removed but it is still electrically non-conductive due to removed mineral salts. Also prone to becoming an electrolyte and assisting galvanic corrosion when it becomes impure over time. Cheapest of the three.

Coolant:
Usually mostly made up of distilled or ultra pure distilled. Also contains biocides to prevent algae growth and anti-corrosives which help prevent corrosion. It is more expensive than both distilled and de-ionised but requires nothing to be added.

I'm assuming other then the coolant both others need biocide, anti-corrosives and dye

other then the price what is the real difference for water cooling only

Once you add that stuff, its practically the same, except coolant tends to have a higher shelf life. Dye tends to stain tubing where pre-mixed coolants or even mayhems concentrates with water don't stain as much.

No temperature difference.

Just checked Mayhems Coolants they all have a shelve life of 3 years, been using Mayhems XT it does not need anything added biocide, anti-corrosives, etc.

Its very good value for your money was using a pre-mix this does the job for my set up see sig, one 150ml to 2.5 litre bottle of de-ionised water from Morrisons. As l have to PC's H2o cooled.

Thanks,
also I've not used my water cooling parts for a few months. can I use them without doing anything ?

Would i need new tubing ?

Uhm. Bottle of coolant costs 6£.
I really can't see why would you use some substitute if the said proffessional coolant costs only 2-3£ more.

That's £6 per litre.

A 150ml Mayhems XT-1 concentrate is £7, add to that £4 for 5L of De-Ionized and that's £11 for enough to make 3L of coolant (plus a spare 2L of DI). That's £3.66 per litre vs £6 for premixed (or £8 if it's Mayhems, apples to apples).

Mayhems XT-1 150ml Clear Coolant Concentrate is not some substitute --> Coolant Concentrate.

Read the info - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=WC-084-MH&groupid=962&catid=1531&subcat=2416

Mayhems XT-1 150ml Clear Coolant Concentrate £6.98 make's up to 3ltre's it needs nothing added like Biocide, Anti-corrosive's, etc
good value for your money as de-ionised water is dirt cheap to buy.

I just buy a 2.5 litre bottle of De-ionized water 1.49 from Morrison's add the Mayhems XT-1 150ml £6.98 =£8.47 for 2.5litre's.

If you make the full 3litre's De-ionized water £1.78+Mayhems XT-1 £6.98=£8.76/3=£2.92 per litre.

A pre-mix can start from £5.99 per litre x3=£17.97 for 3 litre's.

People have used distiled or de-ionized water with Silver Kill Coil and a few drops of Anti-corrosive's or even a good make of Anti-freeze for their loops.

Just a bit confused, So should I get premixed coolant, or Mayhems XT-1 150ml and mix it.
Im a novice when it comes to water cooling, as you can see.

Hi, nothing wrong with Mayhems XT-1 150ml and mix it your self, what l do is mark the bottle into 3 shots giving roughly 50ml.

So 1 shot Mayhems about 50ml to 1 litre de-ionized water use a measuring jug. Morrison's-£1.49 for 2.5 litres, Asda, Wilkinson's, Halfords sell de-ionized water sadly not all garages do.

Using concentrated pre-mixes has a few advantages.

When you are cleaning your loop to change fluid colour, no need to take it apart, you can just run de-ionised water through it and rinse out the old one, then add a the concentrate to the loop after via the reservoir.

This way, you can also avoid wasting coolant if there is a leak, but holding off until after the leak test before chucking it in.

EK-Ekoolant coolant is it any good ?

also does it matter if I get Mayhems XT-1 clear or coloured, does Overclockers sell Phobya Balancer 150 black nickel ???

EK-Ekoolant coolant is fine or Mayhems XT-1 clear or coloured ok as well. But if you want colour have you looked at the coloured tubing to see if one of them would do the job?
