Distorted screen using USB-C on Windows device unless I turn on HDR

Hi all. New to the forum and didn't know where else to seek help. I have an LG UHD 27UN83A 4K monitor, which is used with several laptops, all with the USB-C to USB-C cable that came with the screen. When we bought it we used it with my personal laptop (2020 Intel 4-port Macbook pro), my wife's office laptop (M1 Macbook air) and my then office laptop (Lenovo X380 Yoga). Up until this point all good, plugging the monitor using only the USB-C to USB-cable to all these devices and getting both charge and display with no issues.

My employer then "upgraded" me to a Lenovo L14 and then I started to get distortion when I plugged that laptop as in this picture (Picture (onedrive)). I would not get this problem if I used an HDMI cable with that laptop and, sometimes, if I plugged and unplugged the USB-C cable enough times, it would actually work. It would also work if I switched on HDR for the LG screen but the problem would come back the moment I switched it off (my eyes find HDR a bit jarring for work, hence why I don't use it).

I recently changed jobs which meant that the Lenovo was out but now I got a surface pro, which only has only two USB-C ports and, surprise suprise, same problem again (the picture is actually from the Surface Pro, but it was identical with the Lenovo). The weird thing is that if I leave it plugged but then I switch HDR on and off for the LG screen it will work perfectly (unlike the Lenovo for which I had t leave it on), until it falls asleep and then the next time it wakes up I have to do it again.

I recently bought another USB-C to USB-C cable to see if it was that - one of the better ones on Amazon - but no luck. Same issue.

The screen has the latest firmware and it seems that the problem only arises with newer Windows-based devices (my wife recently got an M2 Macbook Air at work and, again, no issues).

Any thoughts?
