Disturbingly Low Transfer Speeds

I am trying to copy the contents of a DVD onto my hard disk from a SATA I DVDRW drive, and the transfer speed never tops more than 7Mb/s. This is way slower than USB2 for example and I'm sure something isn't right - but I can't figure out what?

Motherboard : Asus M2N32 SLI Deluxe.
DVDRW : Samsung SH183A.

You ripping or copying files? A lot of drives seem to be limited in how fast they can rip as opposed to plain reads from a DVD-R(OM)

Big files or small ones? 7Mb/s would be about right for a bunch of 100-200Kb files. At that sort of size the overhead of the HDD having to keep the MFT up to date slows the overall transfer rate down.

Ooops forgot about this thread.

They're mostly large files - around a GB in size.
