Ditching runflats - few questions

Yeah but is the insurance assessor really going to refuse a claim because you removed runflat tyres ?

find me proof such an incident has ever occured in the history of insurance claims and i'll eat my hat. With tomatoe sauce. live on youtube lol :p

The sensor is not a pressure sensor its a vibration sensor which is why it can't detect a gradual loss of pressure.

You sure about that?

Just I remember getting in the car when I picked it up from BMW last month after some warranty work and the tyre pressure icon was on the dash. They took it back in and one of the tyre pressures was low so thet sorted it. The service guy said if it drops below a set psi then the icon will show up on the dash.

True, but I'd still rather declare everything then they have no excuse for not paying out if you stick it into a tree or central reservation if you have a blowout or simliar tyre related problem.

Minis have had runflats for ages now but the latest ones are now coming fitted with normal tyres, looks like BMW have finally come to their senses.

What did the insurance co say when you declared it ?

if the woman i spoke to can get confused by optional alloy wheels i dread to think how confused they can get over removing runflat tyres lol.

If liability is disputed it wont be your insurance accessor you might be worrying about.

Insurance company refuse a claim on the smallest of detail? Yeah that never happens.....

I think its a point worth highlighting and checking with your insurance company. TWith most policy holders confirming that the vehicle isn't modified the onus of proof is not on me.

That right it does as the sensor detects the change in vibration caused by the drop in pressure. You need to read the manual on them as if you change the pressure you need to be moving to reset the sensors and then they know what each tyre is behaving like, so can detect the changes caused by pressure loss.

If you have something like the Jag XF the values or caps (can't remember which) are pressure sensitive and send a signal to the car about the pressures. They costs a fortune to replace, hence why most tyre pressure sensors are vibration based.

I haven't declared anything to do with tyres I run Michelin PS2 ZPs

Ah thats great to know, will have a look through the handbook next time I'm up at my folks. Was a little worried about them having pressure sensitive valves hence asking about costs if they failed after using tyre weld :)

I thought the alternative to in tyre pressure sensors was for the system to use the ABS to determine wheel rotational speed. As the tyre deflates it effectitvely reduces its diameter and thus starts to spin faster compared to the other wheels. The ABS detects one wheel is spining faster and deduces that wheel has had a drop in pressure below a set level.

Coincidentally I was looking at E90 run flat to normal options myself last night, since I've started to look at getting one. Apparently you can get a mobility kit that includes a steel spare wheel which you obviously have to keep in the boot. Though from what I read you have to be careful which model you take it from as there can be problems with clearance around the brakes with a non standard wheel.

One option would be to rely on tyre weld for short trips around and about, but for major trips take the spare with you for piece of mind.

This is how I read it in the manual when my Dad had his 135i.
