Nice series again, but that noise is pretty bad.

Now that you've got a good body / lens set-up, I think you need to get hold of some strobes for shooting BBall. Even if you can't down your ISO, it'll mean that the shots can be exposed correctly and lessen the appearence of noise, it'll also mean that you can use faster shutter speeds, as some of the shots seems a little bit motion blurred.

Try the fred miranda forums for examples of how the pros do it, some cracking stuff over there.

Some impressive shots you have here... obviously noise is evident but indoor sports are not easy
and I think you made a good job of these
Cheers Chris

unfortunately decent strobe set ups are both very costly and require good access to the arena, i'd be lookin at thousands upon thousands for a good strobe. My 20D struggles with basketball immensely, meaning a lot of shots JUST miss focusing, so i have to apply a bit more sharpening that i'd like, bringing out the noise even more. I've seen shots by a friend of mine down south in a worse lit gym with his 1DmkII, and they are fantastic. Shutter speed isn't going to be getting much faster than it already is, 1/640th is quite fast. If i can nail the focusing better, like you can see in the last shot, noise isn't that prevelant at all.

I can barely see the noise unless I look closely. I think the photos are upto rG's usual standard, just as good as the last bunch. Noiseware/ninja/pirate/etc might be able to help clean them up a bit but I don't see it as a life threatening issue.

I really like them all...except number 3. I'm finding the crowd too distracting in the background on that one.

Yeah, it does start to cost a lot of dosh if you want to get in to it seriously.
The last shot is cracking when it comes to noise, if you could get them all like that then you'd be sorted.

Why not sell your body to buy a 1dsmkII then? (and I don't mean the black metal one ;))

1DSmkII would be bad for sport :p Worse noise than the 20D, far slower burst, but better focusing. The biggest order i've had so far is A3, and 8.2mp copes admirably with that size. 1DmkIIn is my next purchase, need to string together more sales and get some unrelated job as well.

Yea, the last shot's a prime example of nailing the focus equalling nailing the noise, I didnt have to sharpen that at all the default 300% 0.3 that gets done to every image i process (canon reccomended amount, as said in the manual :))

This is a 2 leg game, with the away leg being in 2 weeks. I'm going to rent a 1DmkII for that day and go with the team, and hopefully see an improvement, but with my luck the hall they play will be needing the 85mm F1.2 and pushing iso3200 to 12,800 :p

Had an email today from another photographer who was there, covering the game for a Worthing newspaper, basically asking for my advice after seeing my results :o She said her results were nowhere near as good :) Despite my unhappiness with them, I must be doing something right as others are noticing them.

Also had another friend who has never done basketball photography try and cover one of my games, and at the end he was like "how the HELL do you manage to cover basketball so well? It's so crazy" :)

I think your using a Nikon branded monitor mate, The noise isnt at all bad. Sure its showing but whoever said noise was bad. I think he does a fantastic job capturing the moment. Its all in good practice anyway.

Theres a lot of gay going on in the last shot with the guys hand jesture and the half a bouncing body :P (quite comical in general)

Out of all of them I personally love shot 4. Its great capture of one on one sport. Also the background is one of those simple backgrounds with next to non distraction from the forground :)
