Divx files on Vista Ultimate

Hi guys.

Had Vista Ultimate 64 installed for the last few days, no serious problems yet! Anyway, installed codecs for Divx, Xvid, etc and the video files work fine through Media Player. I decided to see what Media Center is like, but can't run the Divx or Xvid files through it. Just keeps saying invalid file.... or something like that. I would have thought Media Center would use the same codecs as Media Player but obviously not. Any ideas how or where I install them?

Another thing, installed the latest nVidia GeForce drivers but found out that the 64bit drivers don't support SLi mode yet..... gutted!!! Will have to wait for a later release.

Installed BattleField2 to checkout game performance, no problems there.

Will give it a couple of weeks before I stop using XP, OS's are installed on separate HDD's.

Cheers.

Interesting... so no problems with any apps or games apart from divx through media player? Games perform fast?

Ooooh do I buy x64 ultimate? am a bit worried about reports of low memory warnings for people with 2gig of ram ec.

I have 2GB of RAM and I havn't had a single instance of memory running out, even when playing BF2142. I leave x-fire, msn messegner, media player, sidebar, defender and internet explorer open while doing it too.

I do have a 1GB flash stick being used as Ready Boost though, not sure if this would impact anything along those lines.

I'd love to meet these people - because, to be honest, I don't believe anyone with 2GB of RAM has had a low memory warning under any version of Vista.
Sounds like a bit more MS bashing with no basis in reality or proof to me.

Hi guys.

Just to clarify.....

I'm not having and problems running Divx or Xvid through Media Player, the problem is when I run Media Center from the start menu in Vista Ultimate. The .avi files won't work. Surely it should use the same codecs for both systems?

I think I replied on autopilot last time. My desktop running Vista Ultimate x86 runs XviD/DivX fine in WMP and Media Center just fine, as I said.

Another desktop I have running Vista Ultimate x64 has the same problem as yours, I think. WMP works fine, but Media Center says 'Codecs required to play this file are missing', or similar. Sound about right? I never looked too far into it, as Media Center is never used on that PC really.

It certainly should use the same files for both. Only other similarity between the two systems that I've spotted (apart from Ultimate x64) is nVidia graphics.

Thanks Charlie,

I'm not really expecting to use Media Center on my main PC either, just thought I would see what it is like as I may buy Vista Home Premium for the PC in my lounge to stream audio and video from my Thecus network box.

Will have another look into it tonight.
