My girlfriend wants to put a lock on her door to keep her nosey nephew and niece out of her room when she isn't in. I've taken the current handle off the door to check what kind of mechanism would fit, now I'm told this is an old style fitment and the only solution might be to drill the door below the handle and put a barrel lock in.

Is this correct or has anyone else got any suggestions?

That's an old style of latch yes, get a rim cylinder with night latch and be done with it.

Otherwise go the route of a mortice dead lock.

Go on admit it, this is a hump-lock ;)

Well seeing as it only needs to be locked when shes not in the room, I'm not sure how your theory pans out...

Would a security bolt be suitable that you wind out with a key?

Good point lads.

OP I am disappointed, having reviewed the situation I can see you in no way trying to take advantage of it.

I'll repeat, I am disappoint, this is a golden opportunity for a lock that locks on the inside too..

Something like this if you don't want to hack the door, though you would need to drill a small hole for the upper mount.
